Skill Based Combat : How Guild Wars 2 Makes It Work

Published on July 19, 2012, by in PC Games, Videos.

In anticipation of the Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend Event 3 (BWE3) I went out watching some YouTube videos to get pumped up. The video I am showcasing here does a great job of demonstration how the combat in Guild Wars 2 is heavily skill based. I personally thought the PvP in guild wars 2 was the best I have personally ever played in a themepark mmo .  The cast while moving + dodge system really makes the combat feel very different than games like WOW or Star Wars. I may or may not have some beta keys to give out for this weekend (July 20

Steamed Penguins: Valve Is Coming To Linux

Published on July 17, 2012, by in PC Games, Previews.

Get out your Redhats folks, it’s time for an open source party! OK OK, lame jokes aside…This is really exciting news for the Linux community. Gabe Newell, co-founder and managing director at Valve, has been making head-way with a small team since 2011 to bring Steam (and the Source engine) to Linux. After a lot of discussion, Gabe decided to expand the team and make it happen. Soon after, they began to get the work done on porting Steam and Left 4 Dead 2 over to Ubuntu. If you’re asking why Ubuntu, here is an excerpt from Valve’s blog with

Marvel Heroes: An Upcoming MMO

Published on July 17, 2012, by in PC Games, Previews.

A new free-to-play MMO is on the horizon and it’s not what you might think. When I first heard about Marvel Heroes there wasn’t much information going around. I likened it to DC Universe Online, the Action-MMO developed by Sony Online Entertainment and quickly brushed it off. That was a mistake. DC Universe isn’t horrible mind you, it’s actually fairly decent. But I’m tired of half-assed MMO’s and WOW Clones, which is essentially what DC Universe is, despite it’s action-based elements. So when I heard about Marvel following suit, I wasn’t really interested. Now, in the glorious light of ComicCon, a

Metacritic: The Developer’s Bane

I read a great article on IGN’s website today about the negative impact Metacritic is having on the video game industry. It’s a very well-written piece and a very important article if you have any interest in how games are developed and the ridiculous standards these hard-working individuals are being held accountable for. I have been opposed to Metacritic for a long time, mostly because the internet troll types can (and often do) take charge of the rating of a game in order to down-vote it for no other reason than they are sour about some usually simple and insignificant fact.

12 Months of Gameplay Data from Xfire

Published on July 14, 2012, by in PC Games.

Don’t take these as an end-all-be-all, as its some rough data gathered from Xfire players. But it should do a fairly good job of painting a picture of what people are playing. Of course, there are a ton of other games out there that are being played, but these are by far the top contenders. League of Legends is just crushing everything right now. There are a lot of people saying DOTA 2 will give LOL a run for it’s money. I’m not so sure about that. I think DOTA 2 will be very successful but will cater to a different type of player

Rome 2: Total War

Published on July 13, 2012, by in PC Games, Previews.

The Total War series has always been one of my favorite game series for the PC. Being a fan of both real time and turn based strategy, on top of a Risk fanatic, has made the Total War series a complete classic in my book. I have played Medieval, Medieval II, Shogun II, and of course Rome Total War. They have made ancient warfare such  an art form that Sun Tzu would truely be proud. Of all the games, none have captured my attention, dedication, praise, and hours of my life as the first Rome Total War. After The better

Team Fortress 2 : Pulp Fiction Edition (Video)

Published on July 12, 2012, by in PC Games, Videos.

We are starting to see more and more of this kind of thing now that the source filmmaker is available to the masses. This classic scene from Pulp Fiction works incredibly well. The Demoman always kind of reminded me of Samuel L. Jackson anyway. And for the record… he does NOT look like a bitch. This video was posted to the thingshappen YouTube channel, where there are a bunch of other pc gaming related videos (go subscribe). I personally have not had the chance to play with the source filmmaker, but I would be interested in playing around with it for a bit.

Guild Wars 2 : The Cash Shop in Under 3 Min (Video)

Guild Wars 2 has no monthly subscription, it does however have a cash shop.   Here I overview the Guild Wars 2 cash shop in about 3 minutes. From what I have seen so far, I think the cash shop is done pretty well. There is nothing in here that will give players willing to buy in game items a competitive advantage. This video was taken during BWE 2, the shop may be changed in the final game release. Categories of items: 1. Style (cosmetic) : Silly hats, sunglasses, and things to wear around town. My personal favorite is the transmute
